"He knows he's not supposed to grab things — he just did it anyway." That sentence is usually completely true, and it's also the whole story: knowing a rule and having the in-the-moment ability to stop yourself from breaking it are two genuinely different skills, and the second one develops much more slowly than the first.
What impulse control actually is
Impulse control is the brain's ability to insert a pause between an urge and an action — to notice "I want to grab that" or "I want to yell that" and hold it long enough to choose differently. That pause function is one of the last cognitive skills to mature, developing gradually through childhood and adolescence. A child who "knows better" but still acts on impulse isn't lying or being defiant — the knowing and the doing genuinely run on different systems.
What helps build the pause
- Practice the pause in low-stakes moments. Simple games that require waiting a beat (freeze games, "Simon says," turn-taking games) are quietly training the exact same brain circuitry used to resist a real impulse.
- Reduce the temptation, don't just rely on willpower. Moving a breakable object out of reach isn't giving up on teaching self-control — it's removing a test the skill isn't ready for yet, which is good strategy, not a shortcut.
- Build in a physical pause step. "Hands in your pockets and count to three" gives a concrete action to do instead of just "calm down," which is much harder to execute mid-impulse.
- Praise the catch, not just the outcome. "You really wanted to grab that and you stopped yourself" reinforces the skill itself, which matters even more than whether they succeeded every time.
- Watch sleep and screen time. Both measurably affect impulse control — a tired, overstimulated brain has less capacity for the pause than a rested one.
When to look closer
Some impulsivity is developmentally typical at every age. A pattern that's noticeably more frequent or intense than peers, or that's creating real problems at school or with friends, is worth understanding more specifically rather than assuming it will resolve with maturity alone.
