Behavior

Constant "no" battles

Problem: Every request becomes a power struggle.

Hack: Swap the order: give two choices that you are happy with. "Pajamas or jacket first?" The job gets done either way, and your child gets to feel in charge, which is usually what the "no" was really about.

Child ignores you until you shout

Problem: You ask five times, then yell, then feel awful.

Hack: Walk over, crouch, and touch their shoulder before you speak. Then ask them to repeat what you said back to you. Looking, touching and repeating gets you listened to at a whisper, so you never get to the yelling.

Constant interrupting

Problem: You cannot finish one sentence on the phone.

Hack: Teach the "squeeze": your child puts a hand on your arm when they need you, and you squeeze back to say "I know you're there." Then you finish your thought and turn to them. They learn to wait without words.

The tone you do not like

Problem: Eye rolls and attitude at age seven.

Hack: Instead of reacting, say "Try that again, like you are asking a friend." Calmly, once. Giving them the redo teaches the skill without a lecture, and you stay out of the fight.

Lying to avoid trouble

Problem: Your child lies when they are scared of your reaction.

Hack: Say "I'm not going to be mad if you tell me the truth, and I'll be glad you told me." Then keep that promise, even when the truth is ugly. Kids lie to protect themselves, so make the truth safe.

Kids fighting over who goes first

Problem: Every turn becomes a fight about fairness.

Hack: Hand over a kitchen timer or an "it's your turn" stone. Whoever holds it goes first, then passes it on when the timer rings. A neutral object is a far better referee than you are.

Whining that drills into your skull

Problem: The whiny voice is the thing that breaks you.

Hack: Say "I can't hear whiny, can you say it in your strong voice?" and give an example. Then reward the strong voice instantly with a yes, when you can. Kids copy what works.

Hitting or grabbing siblings

Problem: You are a full-time referee.

Hack: Teach a "stop hand": a flat palm and one word, "Stop!". Practice it in a calm moment with a stuffed animal. Then, in the heat of it, you only need to point to the hand, and you coach what to do instead.
