Deep breathing never works
Problem: You tell them to breathe and they refuse.
Hack: Make it a toy: "smell the flower, blow out the candle", or breathe on a pinwheel or bubbles. Blowing bubbles forces a slow, long out-breath without ever asking for "calm down".
Big feelingsMeltdown in a public place
Problem: Your child falls apart in the middle of the store.
Hack: Whisper instead of talking loudly, because they have to be quiet to hear you. Crouch, say "I'm here, we can go somewhere quiet," and move to the car or an aisle end. Calm voices are contagious, and a whisper lowers theirs.
Big feelingsTrouble with a big change
Problem: A move, a new baby or a new school makes everything harder.
Hack: Make a "what will happen" picture book together with phone photos: the new room, the new teacher, the new bus. Walk through it every night for a week. Kids handle changes they have already seen.
Big feelingsApologies that mean nothing
Problem: "Sorry" is said through gritted teeth.
Hack: Replace "say sorry" with "what can you do to help fix it?" A drawing, a snack, a hug, a fix. Repair teaches real accountability, which a forced word never does.
Big feelingsWorries at bedtime
Problem: Bedtime turns into a worry party.
Hack: Make a "worry box": write or draw the worry on a slip, fold it, and put it in a shoebox. Tell them the box will hold it overnight and you will look together in the morning. Most worries are smaller by breakfast.
Big feelingsKid is "bored" when angry
Problem: They are loud and they do not know why.
Hack: Give a physical outlet first: "wall push-ups", squeeze a pillow, stomp up the stairs ten times. Move the body, then talk. Big feelings live in the body before they reach words.
Big feelingsChild cannot name their feelings
Problem: Your child just screams "I'm mad" for everything.
Hack: Use a feelings thermometer drawn on paper from 1 to 5. "Where are you right now?" Pointing is easier than naming, and you get a number to track from week to week.
