Homework meltdowns

Problem: Homework is a nightly war.

Hack: Use "five-minute chunks": five minutes of work, a one-minute break, repeat. Starting is the hard part; short chunks make the first step easy and the work gets done before the fight begins.

Last-minute school projects

Problem: A project is due tomorrow and you just heard.

Hack: Keep a "project box" with glue, markers, scissors, poster board and cardstock. You have the supplies on hand at 8pm, and you can be calm instead of running to the store.

Lost water bottles and jackets

Problem: You re-buy school gear every month.

Hack: Label everything with a laundry marker or an iron-on name, plus a bright keychain on the water bottle. Kids notice a unique item, and the label gets it returned when it goes missing.

Where do I begin with reading?

Problem: Your child resists reading time.

Hack: Read the first page aloud, then switch: you read a page, they read a page. Let them choose any book, even comics. Reading together beats reading alone for a reluctant reader.

Dread of the school morning

Problem: Your child says they hate school on Monday.

Hack: Start a tiny goodbye ritual: a secret handshake, a drawn heart on the wrist, or a note in the lunchbox. A consistent routine at the door makes the goodbye short and warm.

Forgets the school notes

Problem: Permission slips live at the bottom of the backpack.

Hack: Take a photo of every paper the minute it comes out of the bag, then sign it right there. A basket on the counter catches the original. You never lose the due date.
