No time with each child
Problem: Your day is a blur and one child gets less time.
Hack: Build ten minutes of "special time" into each day, with the child's choice of activity and phones away. Name it ("Mia time"). A short, reliable moment beats a long, rare outing.
Something elseThe "I'm bored" song
Problem: Five minutes after you set out the toys, "I'm bored".
Hack: Make a boredom jar with slips like "build a fort", "draw a map", "call grandma". Pull one out when they complain. The jar stays out for next time, so you are not the entertainer.
Out and aboutKids wander off in crowds
Problem: You are terrified of losing them at a busy place.
Hack: Dress them in one bright color and write your phone number on their arm in marker (or on a bracelet). Take a photo of them that morning. If lost, you can describe them instantly and a stranger can call you.
Out and aboutLong car rides
Problem: You are 20 minutes in and hear "are we there yet".
Hack: Put a paper chain of snacks and activities in the backseat: one link per 20 minutes, each with a surprise. They watch the chain shrink instead of asking.
ScreensScreen time ends in tears
Problem: Turning off the tablet starts a meltdown.
Hack: Give a 5-minute and a 1-minute warning with a kitchen timer, and let your child press the "stop" button themselves. End on a natural pause like finishing a level, and name what comes next: "Then it's snack time."
SchoolHomework meltdowns
Problem: Homework is a nightly war.
Hack: Use "five-minute chunks": five minutes of work, a one-minute break, repeat. Starting is the hard part; short chunks make the first step easy and the work gets done before the fight begins.
SleepEarly riser at 5:30am
Problem: The sun is not even up and your child is.
Hack: Use a kids' "OK to wake" clock or a cheap light on a plug timer: the light stays dim until the right time. Teach them: "color is red, stay in bed; green, you can come out."
SleepKid keeps getting out of bed
Problem: You walk them back to bed 12 times a night.
Hack: Give two "bedtime passes", paper tickets they can spend for one drink or one hug. When the passes are gone, the answer is a calm "see you in the morning". Unused passes earn a small reward.
Food and eatingVegetables go untouched
Problem: Veggies come back untouched every night.
Hack: Serve them first, as an appetizer, while kids are hungriest and dinner is still cooking. Cut the veggies into cool shapes, add a dip, and they vanish before the main course arrives.
Food and eatingPicky eater refusing everything
Problem: Your child eats five foods and all are beige.
Hack: Serve a "no-pressure plate": one safe food next to one tiny new bite, with zero comment. Kids often need 10 to 15 calm exposures. Eating is not the goal on day one; seeing and smelling is.
Big feelingsDeep breathing never works
Problem: You tell them to breathe and they refuse.
Hack: Make it a toy: "smell the flower, blow out the candle", or breathe on a pinwheel or bubbles. Blowing bubbles forces a slow, long out-breath without ever asking for "calm down".
Big feelingsMeltdown in a public place
Problem: Your child falls apart in the middle of the store.
Hack: Whisper instead of talking loudly, because they have to be quiet to hear you. Crouch, say "I'm here, we can go somewhere quiet," and move to the car or an aisle end. Calm voices are contagious, and a whisper lowers theirs.
